Is worth inherent?
Somewhere in the universe, in its own secluded dimension, a barren world, jealous of the thriving communities on other worlds, decided that it wasn't; worth had to be earned, and those who couldn't survive deserved to perish. To prove its twisted reasoning, the world (or World, for it is in possession of a sentience) decided to pluck the people and places it deemed as worthless away from their homes and drop them off here. Those who are too kind, or too sharp; those who are too cruel, or too merciful; those who are pointless, those who do not meet the World's arbitrary criteria of worth.
But even the most barren and unforgiving of places can become a home, for the World does not understand how much impact a single life can have.
