HISTORY
Born to a white father and a Japanese mother, Esme was always a little bit different. She was quieter, screamed when she was touched, was a bit sickly. It didn't matter - her parents still adored her. Esme was cared for and loved, and spent the very beginning of her life in England with both of her parents. Unfortunately, it... didn't last. When she was but five years old, her father died in a car crash. The young girl was devastated; her mother, not so much. It hadn't been a marriage of love, after all.
The two packed up and moved back to Japan, her mother feeling more familiar/at home there, and for the first year-ish, Esme was utterly despondent in this new country. She felt odd, she felt as though she stuck out, and she was so very alone. From 5-6, it was the loneliest year of her life. She didn't leave the house but for school, and even then, she stayed by herself. She didn't make friends, she didn't talk to anyone, she stayed absolutely silent. Mute, in fact.
When she was 6, however, that did change. Her mother remarried, and all of a sudden, Esme had both a step father and a step brother. She had two people in her life - two men, when the only man she had had before was her deceased father - and it was... strange. It could've gone badly. It partially did, in fact. Esme wasn't particularly comfortable around her stepfather, though he was better than most men. Her stepbrother, though, her dear stepbrother...
They connected on a deep level, and she found herself with an ally to navigate through her life. Flash forward almost a decade, and she still has that connection - and only that connection, truly. She finds it difficult to make friends and so clings to her stepbrother all the tighter. But now that they're going to two different schools, two different locations... Well. She needs to branch out.
But how can you do something like that when you've kept to yourself your whole life?
