Tamaki is the illegitimate son of Yuzuru Suoh, the chairman of Ouran Academy and the French beauty his father fell in love with during a trip to Paris, Anne-Sophie de Grantaine. After his birth, under the strict orders of Shzue Suoh (Tamaki’s Paternal Grandmother), Tamaki and his mother remained in France while his father returned to Japan. This is where the blonde spent the first fourteen years of his life until a deal was struck between his grandmother and mother in which he would go to Japan, but this is following his mother’s “disappearance.” From then on he has lived in Japan, residing in a mansion apart from his father and grandmother due to the matriarchs refusal to acknowledge his position as her grandson, often calling him a “filthy child” whenever he is spoken of.

Tamaki entered Ouran Academy in the beginning of his middle-school third year. It was then that he befriended Kyoya, following his best-friend’s outburst which revealed his inner struggles to become the heir of his own family. He then moves on to high school and towards the end of his first year began to make arrangements for Ouran Academy’s Host Club with the help of Kyoya. He then managed to recruit and befriend Mitsukuni "Honey" Haninozuka after convincing the small blonde to embrace his love for cute things, as well as Honey’s cousin, Takashi "Mori" Morinozuka.

Following their graduation from middle-school, Tamaki also convinced Hikaru and Kaoru Hitachiin to join the Host Club, following several failed and one successful attempt at the twins’ game of “Which one is Hikaru.” He has since formed a very strong bonds with the other hosts of the club. Haruhi Fujioka has also joined the ranks of the Host Club somewhat recently since she managed to break a very expensive vase. Though she was originally mistaken for a boy and the blonde now attempts to push her to become much more lady-like out of the concerns and care of a loving father! His attempts have proven to be somewhat futile. In reality he has mistaken his attraction for the scholarship student as that of paternal love, but it means nothing since he will always put his desires to please the guests of the club and the protection of his family first!
